چکیده

This article deals with solving partial differential equations with the finite element method on hybrid non-conforming hexahedral-tetrahedral meshes. By non-conforming, we mean that a quadrangular face of a hexahedron can be connected to two triangular faces of tetrahedra. We introduce a set of low-order continuous (C) finite element spaces defined on these meshes. They are built from standard tri-linear and quadratic Lagrange finite elements with an extra set of constraints at non-conforming hexahedra-tetrahedra junctions to recover continuity. We consider both the continuity of the geometry and the continuity of the function basis as follows: the continuity of the geometry is achieved by using quadratic mappings for tetrahedra connected to tri-affine hexahedra and the continuity of interpolating functions is enforced in a similar manner by using quadratic Lagrange basis on tetrahedra with constraints at non-conforming junctions to match tri-linear hexahedra. The so-defined function spaces are validated numerically on simple Poisson and linear elasticity problems for which an analytical solution is known. We observe that using a hybrid mesh with the proposed function spaces results in an accuracy significantly better than when using linear tetrahedra and slightly worse than when solely using tri-linear hexahedra. As a consequence, the proposed function spaces may be a promising alternative for complex geometries that are out of reach of existing full hexahedral meshing methods.

Adaptive Finite Element Simulation of Incompressible Flows by Hybrid Continuous-Discontinuous Galerkin Formulations

In this work we design hybrid continuous-discontinuous finite element spaces that permit discontinuities on non-matching element interfaces of non-conforming meshes. Then, we develop an equal-order stabilized finite element formulation for incompressible flows over these hybrid spaces, which combines the element interior stabilization of SUPGtype continuous Galerkin formulations and the jump st...

Higher-order Finite Elements for Hybrid Meshes Using New Nodal Pyramidal Elements

We provide a comprehensive study of arbitrarily high-order finite elements defined on pyramids. We propose a new family of high-order nodal pyramidal finite element which can be used in hybrid meshes which include hexahedra, tetrahedra, wedges and pyramids. Finite elements matrices can be evaluated through approximate integration, and we show that the order of convergence of the method is conse...

We study the stability in the H1-seminorm of the L2-projection onto finite element spaces in the case of nonuniform but shape regular meshes in two and three dimensions and prove, in particular, stability for conforming triangular elements up to order twelve and conforming tetrahedral elements up to order seven.

On Nonobtuse Refinements of Tetrahedral Finite Element Meshes

It is known that piecewise linear continuous finite element (FE) approximations on nonobtuse tetrahedral FE meshes guarantee the validity of discrete analogues of various maximum principles for a wide class of elliptic problems of the second order. Such analogues are often called discrete maximum principles (or DMPs in short). In this work we present several global and local refinement techniqu...

The THex Algorithm and a Simple Darcy Solver on Hexahedral Meshes

In this paper, we first present the THex algorithm that refines a tetrahedral mesh into a hexahedral mesh. Strategies for efficient implementation of the THex algorithm are discussed. Then we present the lowest order weak Galerkin (WG) (Q0, Q0;RT[0]) finite element method for solving the Darcy equation on general hexahedral meshes. This simple solver uses constant pressure unknowns inside hexah...
